Jeffrey Lewis &The Junkyard (Monday 25th of July)
Lots of things happened on the 25th of july in the past. Mozard created his Symphony No. 40 in G minor and two young Puerto Rican pro-independence activists were killed in a police ambush. Lately Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard played a show at Chéz Heinz in Hanover and although it is most likely that there wont be a wikipedia-article about it, it was still an amazing evening filled with low-budget videos, honestly beautiful tunes and smart lyrics.
After starting off with some hypnotically beautiful (anti-?)folkish tunes, including the brilliant to be objectified, that set a warm mellow mood things quickly became a little rougher due to the equipment of the Chéz Heinz that the band used on that evening that was steering the sound into psychedelic/surf-rock territory. Surprising but well-sounding nevertheless.
A really special gem of the Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard live experience however are the low-budget movies that turned out to be two well drawn and humorous comics about the french revolution and Pocahontas. Mr. Lewis told the stories shown in the pictures while the band was playing and it worked out very well.
Of course the concert couldn’t be concluded without an encore and they even covered “Punk is dead”, which was originally done by Crass, in a folky fashion – an original take and very well executed.
All in all I can say that I was glad to discovere the music of Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard on that night and it will go down in my personal history book as pure bliss.
